Music and Spirituality

One of the missions of Resurrectio is to foster the idea that sacred choral music is fundamentally linked to prayer and spirituality. The roots of sacred music are found in the early ascetic monastic orders. For example, Gregorian chant originated as a part of monastic life, with the monks, in accordance with the Rule of Saint Benedict, chanting this sacred music unaccompanied by musical instruments nine times a day.

Like Gregorian chant, sacred choral music inspires a deep reflection on the Word of God and engenders an elevation of the soul. Through this spiritual experience, the singer and listener become sanctified. According to Saint John Chrysostom, “our singing is nothing but an echo of the angelic chant” laying the foundation for a spiritual renewal and enhancing the beauty of the liturgy.
